The Ultimate Vegan Oatmeal Burger

This recipe is definitely a winner. They can be made in larger quantities and they freeze well.

Black beans may be substituted with kidney beans. Pecans, almonds, and cashew may be used instead of walnuts.

This recipe can be modified to use the herbs that you like.

*I decided to redo the recipe to make it gluten-free as well. My readers kept asking me about substitutions and because it’s such a popular recipe I decided to go ahead and do a makeover.

This version is very delicious, my seven-year-old, who is very picky wanted another burger!

Reduce heat and keep on stirring until liquid is absorbed, about 2 minutes.

Remove from heat and allow to cool enough to handle.

Using a large canning jar lid including the rim, form patties placing them on a lightly oiled cookie sheet.

Bake for 30 minutes, turning halfway. You may also cook in a lightly oiled skillet on both sides. Top with your favorite toppings!

  1. Priscilla Carr

this recipe looks delicious. I see comments about cracked wheat or bulghar
and looked back at the recipe those ingredients are not listed recipe above.

    • Michelle Blackwood

Thanks Priscilla, made the original recipe years ago before I changed to gluten-free diet (hence the title ‘Makeover’ so I edited the recipe and it tastes better!

  2. Wonderful blog! I found it while browsing on Yahoo News. Do you have any suggestions on how to get listed in Yahoo News? I’ve been trying for a while but I never seem to get there! Appreciate it

  3. We often have leftover oatmeal and cooked rice, so I was looking for a recipe to use up both. Do you think I could substitute cooked oatmeal for the 4 cups of water and 4 cups of oats and how many cups? Just wondering if you’ve done it.

    • Michelle Blackwood

Misty, I haven’t done it with cooked oatmeal but you could try. The flavor would be right on but I’m not sure about the texture since cooked oatmeal is gooey!

  4. I don’t normally take the time to comment when I’m pinning recipes I want to try, but DAVID is adorable. I had to stop and comment. I’m going to try this recipe this week!! Thanks for sharing.

I’m so sorry I,didn’t learn about your site sooner. But I’m so glad I found you. This BURGER is one of the best that I have ever made, (and I’ve been vegan for a long time, and have tried so many many 🍔). If this is a taste of what’s in your cookbook, I can’t wait to receive mine. Keep up the great work and sharing. There can never be enough great recipes and cookbooks out there. God bless your ministry.

Renee thanks a lot, I’m so happy you found my site and that you had great results with my recipe. Thanks for your support, I really appreciate it! God bless you too.

I just ran across this recipe on Pinterest today and made them this evening. They are delicious and so simple to make!

  5. I think I’m missing something. Do you add the black beans, walnuts and nutritional yeast after the mixture cooks before forming burgers. I’m assuming so but just want to make sure. Thanks looks amazing.

    • Michelle Blackwood

Hello Denise, I just updated the instructions. Hope they are easier to understand. Hope you enjoy them!

  6. Christine McMahan

How many burgers did you get out of this recipe? Definitely going to try it. I wonder how it would hold up on a grill?
    Thank you

    • Michelle Blackwood

Christine, it makes at least 12 burger patties. It really depends on the size of your patties. I never tried it on the grill but I would suggest that you refrigerate the patties for at least 30 minutes before grilling. They freeze well too.

I’ve been scouring the Internet for the perfect vegan oat walnut burger, and this looks like it. Thank you. :-)

I’m planning on making a gluten-free version for lunch today, substituting flax meal for bulghar wheat (and using gluten-free oats).

  8. This looks very good and I am going to try this. Approximately how many servings can you get from this batch?

  9. Using the canning jar lid, how many burgers does this recipe make? Based on the amount of ingredients I’m guessing for just two of us I should at least halve the recipe.

  10. Miss Christy

I made these last night and they were FABULOUS. I’m not a Vegan, but am trying healthier recipes. My 12 yo Meat loving son, liked it too and ate the whole thing! Having the extras for lunch at work today! Thanks for this!

  11. Hi Michelle,

This burger looks great! Could you please tell me how much coriander to use? Thank you for the info and for all the blessings! Take care & God Bless,

    Diane :)

  12. @Nikki, you can find cracked wheat or bulghar in the health section of most large chain supermarkets or in a healthfood store.

This recipe appears simple; burger looks delicious. Where can I find Braggs liquid aminos?

      • Michelle Blackwood

Valencia, it is simple, Braggs liquid aminos can be found in health food stores beside soy sauce or substitute with soy sauce or tamari.
