Boiled Green Bananas

Learn how to boil green bananas in multiple ways using simple methods.  In many Jamaican and Caribbean homes, green bananas are boiled and served as a high-fiber, low-calorie side dish. They are a great substitute for potatoes in the diet.

Ingredients

  • 6 green bananas
  • water
  • 1 teaspoon salt

Instructions

Method One

  • Bring salted water to boil in a large pot over medium-high heat.
  • Wash each banana, cut across the top of the banana and also the bottom but don’t go all the through.
  • Cut lengthwise along the skin, like you are scoring the skin, and try not to cut into the flesh.
  • Hold the banana with one hand while using the thumb the remove the skin from the white flesh.
  • If the water isn’t boiling then place peeled bananas in a bowl with cold water.
  • Transfer peeled bananas to the boiling water.
  • Bring to boil, cover the pot, and reduce to simmer for about 20 minutes or until tender.

Method Two

  • Cut off both ends of each banana, make a slit along the side.
  • Add bananas to boiling salted water and cook until tender, about 20 minutes.
  • Drain water and allow bananas to cool enough to handle. Remove the skin and serve.
