Cranberry Ground Cherry Sauce

This quick and easy cranberry sauce recipe will certainly be a show stopper at this year’s Thanksgiving feast, the golden berries are sweet and fruit and combine perfectly with the tart cranberries. If you can’t find ground cherries then make my Healthy Cranberry Sauce recipe.

This maple cranberry sauce is much healthier than the refined sugar version and it is delicious, adjust maple syrup to your liking, you can substitute the apple juice for orange juice or just use plain water.

Where Can I Purchase Ground Cherries?

Fresh ground cherries can be found at most local supermarkets or even at Walmart at this time of the year. It grows easily from seeds and requires very little care, you can find seeds online on Amazon.

How To Make Cranberry Ground Cherry Sauce

  1. Pick through cranberries and ground cherries and discard any bad ones.
  2. Rinse and drain cranberries and ground cherries.
  3. Dump them in a saucepan, add maple syrup, apple juice, and cinnamon.
  4. Bring to boil on medium-high heat and cook until berries pop and sauce is thick about 10 minutes.
  5. Discard cinnamon stick and scoop sauce in a serving bowl.

Cranberry Ground Cherry Sauce

An amazing take on Cranberry sauce for Thanksgiving. This Cranberry Ground Cherry Sauce is so flavorful, a great combination of sweet and tart with a hint of spice. Cranberries, ground cherries, maple syrup, apple juice, cinnamon stick.

Equipment

  • 1 small pot

Ingredients

  • 1-12 ounces bag fresh cranberries
  • 1 cup ground cherries
  • 1 cup pure maple syrup or cane sugar
  • 1/2 cup apple juice
  • 1 stick cinnamon or 1/4 teaspoon powder

Instructions

  • Sort cranberries discarding any bad ones, rinse cranberries, and ground cherries, drain.
  • Place cranberries, ground cherries, maple syrup, water, and cinnamon stick in a medium sauce to boil on medium-high.
  • Cook until berries pop and sauce is thick enough to your liking, about 10 minutes. Discard cinnamon stick and taste if the sauce is to your liking. Add more sweetener if desire.

    Oh to rave reviews I’ve made a version of this several times. Here in Michigan, if we want ground cherries, we need to grow them ourselves as I’ve never seen them in any store that sells produce. Enter blueberries! Also, the recipe doesn’t thicken to my liking, so I dump some chia seeds into the mixture, and follow the heating directions. Yummy!

    1. That’s awesome, I’m happy you enjoy it. I love the idea of adding chia seeds to thicken to your liking, you can also just cook a little longer to thicken. We have ground cherries here in the supermarkets in Florida but had to grow my own in Virginia. Thank you for your feedback.

    I’d never heard of ground cherries before, but I looked for them here in Michigan. They are no where to be found this time of year. I did learn that my neighbor’s son used to grow them when he could plant a garden.

    This recipe looked so good, so I had to improvise. I used blueberries instead of the ground cherries. I dumped in a little extra cinnamon powder. When it wouldn’t cook down for me, I added about 1/3 cup of chia seeds, which boosts the nutrition. Perfect! I could have eaten the whole thing in one sitting. I shared it with a friend, and she said she loved it just the way it was.

    1. Wow Debi, love your adjustments. It would be nice if you could grow them because they reseed on their own so you will have them for years to come. However you can also substitute with other high pectin fruits like pear, plums, apple, guava. Thank you so much for your feedback.
