Can Tomatoes and Spinach Be Cooked Together?

Yes, tomatoes and spinach can be cooked together. Although you might not believe it, give it a shot. Here’s why cooking with these two common ingredients works unexpectedly well.

Okay, so your question was whether or not it was possible to cook tomatoes and spinach together. Tomatoes and spinach are unquestionably two pantry essentials in every home.

Even though they may be two of your favorite foods, you may not have cooked them together before and are unsure of how they would taste together. Maybe you’re trying to save money by getting the most out of the ingredients you already have because you’re out and it’s at least two days until your next grocery shopping day.

Well, it’s good that you came by.

Tomatoes and spinach can be prepared in a variety of ways, but some of the most popular ones are roasting, stewing, and sautéing.

Before we move on to how to cook tomato-spinach pasta, though, let’s discuss why these 2 pantry staples pair so nicely, especially when correctly prepared.

These two ingredients go together perfectly because of the flavor contrast between the sweet, earthy spinach and the sour, spicy tomatoes.

The tomatoes cook down and the spinach softens when they are stewed or sautéed, creating the most delectable sauce. When tomatoes are cooked, the spinach wilts and the tomatoes have a stronger scent and more intense flavor.

Adding a splash of extra-virgin olive oil, tossing in a diced bulb or two of garlic, and seasoning generously with salt is all you need to make them taste fantastic.

The word “season” is important here. Both the tomatoes and the spinach taste bland, and seasoning them liberally with spices and herbs brings out their depth of fragrance and richness of flavor in ways that would not be possible otherwise.

Spinach is nutritionally dense. It’s low in calories and high in fiber, vitamins, and minerals.  It is a rich source of vitamin C, vitamin K, vitamin A, and folic acid as well as a good source of calcium, iron, and vitamin B6 & 9.

Spinach is also rich in antioxidants, which protect your cells against free radicals. It protects from chronic diseases such as cancer, heart disease, and diabetes, and reduces blood pressure.

Tomatoes, mostly carbohydrate-based with some fiber, are vitamin-dense, including beta-carotene (which converts to vitamin A), vitamins C and E, as well as certain B vitamins and vitamin K. They also have calcium and magnesium in them.

There is also a lot of potassium in tomatoes that have been found to help prevent strokes and heart disease. Studies have found that naturally red tomatoes contain a chemical called lycopene that may help prevent cardiovascular disease.

Ingredients

  • Penne pasta: You can use any type of pasta you like. Some of my favorite pasta kinds include farfelle, penne, rigatoni, and similar varieties.
  • Spinach: Washed baby spinach adds color and texture to this dish. The addition of spinach to the pasta is a fantastic method to boost its nutritional value.
  • Tomato: Ideally use baby tomatoes for this recipe.
  • Onion: Use red, white, or yellow, whatever is available.
  • Garlic: Garlic appears to be a necessary ingredient.
  • Vegan cream: Use your favorite one or Cashew Cream. Wash 1/2 cup cashew with 1 1/4 cup water.
  • Chilli flakes: Add a subtle amount of heat, substitute with cayenne pepper
  • Dried mixed herbs: This gives this pasta dish taste as well as aroma.
  • Olive oil: In order to ensure that rich and flavorful ingredients are present, I like to use good-quality olive oil. Use a more impartial oil, like grapeseed or avocado.

How To Cook Tomato Spinach Pasta?

  1. Boil pasta in salted water.
  2. In a pan, heat some oil and add onion, and garlic.
  3. Sauté onions and garlic until golden brown.
  4. Add in spinach and tomatoes.
  5. Fry for a minute and add boiled pasta.
  6. You may add a little pasta water if required.
  7. Add in all the spices and give it a good mix.
  8. Lastly, add in cream and enjoy! This recipe is so comforting and easy to make.

Serving Ideas

This pasta dish is excellent with vegan chicken, garlic bread or naan, side salads, as well as other foods.

This pasta dish is great with a plate of Vegan Tofu Meatballs since the flavors go so well together. This dish pairs well with a wide range of different sides.

Storage Suggestions

  • The tomato-spinach pasta can be kept in the fridge for up to three days in an airtight container.
  • In a microwave-safe bowl, heat this pasta in the microwave or a pan over medium heat.

Recipe Notes

  • Before adding the tomatoes, the garlic must be sautéed in heated oil for 30 seconds. This gives the garlic just enough time to release its fragrance without burning or imparting an unpleasant flavor.
  • At the very end of cooking, add the spinach, and let it cook until it is soft and tender.
  • Fresh spinach is superior to frozen spinach, however, using frozen spinach is not an issue. The convenience of using frozen means I can keep it on hand without worrying about it going bad.
  • You already know that I adore garlic. So, it’s not surprising that I added a lot to this.
  • Using fresh or dried herbs, garlic, and spring onions to flavor any recipe will help you reduce the quantity of salt you use.

Variations

Perhaps you want to try some new vegetables, tastes, and proteins. You may easily adapt this easy pasta recipe to suit your requirements.

  • To add more depth of flavor, try adding a variety of vegetables such as boiled peas, grilled bell peppers, eggplant, several types of mushrooms, kale, and other grilled vegetables.
  • If you are not vegan you can add chicken, shrimp, grilled salmon, or sausage, to the cooked pasta to boost the dish’s protein content. Vegans can use tofu for more protein.
  • Feta cheese can be sprinkled on top of cooked pasta to provide more cheese taste.
  • Kale can be used in place of the spinach, but be careful to chop it up finely because it will take longer to wilt in the pan.
