Chicken-Style Seasoning

What Is Chicken-Style Seasoning?

Most people have probably only heard of poultry seasoning, all-purpose seasoning, or poultry blends with specific flavors like lemon pepper. However, chicken-style seasoning is not similar to any other commonly found seasoning blend I can think of. It is a unique combination of flavors meant to give vegan foods a flavor profile similar to that found from chicken stock or bouillon.

Within the long-time vegan community, you’ll find that many are familiar with a brand of this vegan chicken bouillon style seasoning, known as McKay’s. Their unique formula, once a cult favorite, has become more common, now even found in some Walmart stores.

As with most things, I like to create my own version; this allows me to play up certain flavors, add elements I find appealing, control sodium levels, and keep my ingredient list nice and simple. For example, my favorite addition is nutritional yeast flakes. It is normally used to add cheesiness to vegan dishes, but I also like to add it to my seasonings to “round out” the flavors.

I also don’t love the fact that McKay’s Chicken-style Seasoning contains dextrose. To be fair, maybe it is a negligible amount, but like the amount of sodium in my food, I prefer to control it myself.

This allows this vegan seasoning blend to be used by those following keto, other low-carb, or low-sodium diets without any need for worry since they can easily omit the offending ingredients. You can also feel free to add your favorite herbs and spices to make it uniquely yours. Takes 5 minutes to prepare.

How To Store Homemade Seasoning Blends?

I recommend keeping your seasoning blends in a tightly closed jar in a cool, dark place such as a cupboard. I am a seasoning fiend, and as such always have many empty bottles. These are great to reuse for various seasoning blends, and you can usually remove the label and add your own. You can also buy spice jars from most craft stores, grocery stores, or online.

Tips For Making Your Blend

  1. Leave out the salt for a no-salt seasoning.
  2. Makes the perfect holiday gift, mother’s day, father’s day, or birthday gift for your foodie family or friend,  using these cute spice jars with labels.
  3. Keep seasoning blends away from heat and moisture in order for them to last longer.

  1. I’ve just discovered this recipe and will give it a try. I don’t use any added sugar though. I make a nooch based combination for popcorn. It’s pretty popular in my circle, so to speak. Take care now and thank you for sharing your recipe.
