Ingredient breakdown

Here is everything you will need for this delicious curried tofu wrap:

  • Tortillas: Tortillas are flatbread made from either all-purpose flour, whole wheat, or corn. You can easily make tortillas at home or get premade ones from the grocery store. These thin flatbreads are light and offer a base for several ingredients. Just place the ingredients for this recipe; I have used gluten-free tortillas. In the enter wrap the tortilla around them to form a wrap or a burrito.

For the Tofu:

  • Tofu: Tofu is made from condensed soybean. It is a widely known vegan ingredient that is rich in protein. Tofu usually doesn’t have a very prominent flavor of its own. So, it absorbs the other flavors or marinade nicely. You can easily get premade tofu from any grocery store. It comes in different textures like soft, crumbly, and firm. Because we are going to fry this tofu, we need extra-firm tofu that is able to hold shape. Also, we won’t want water in it; otherwise, the oil will splatter upon frying. So, make sure you press the tofu, drain it and then cut it into cubes.
  • Coconut oil: We will fry the tofu in coconut oil. The reason for choosing coconut oil is because of its immense health benefits. If you don’t have coconut oil, you can use olive oil or avocado oil as well.
  • Curry powder: The main ingredient to marinate the tofu within curry powder. It is a blend of different spices. You can either make curry powder at home or get it from the grocery store. Curry powder has a bright color and a sweet and savory flavor. It is made from spices like turmeric, cinnamon, cloves, cumin, bay leaf, etc.
  • Onion powder: Adding onion powder will add a more savory flavor to tofu.
  • Garlic powder: Garlick powder adds a depth of flavor to the tofu. You can taste the intense, savory flavor in it.
  • Salt: A little bit of salt will balance out the flavors.

For the Wraps:

  • Vegan mayonnaise: Vegan mayonnaise is a vegan substitute for regular mayonnaise. It has the same creamy texture. The only thing it doesn’t have is egg yolks. Several brands are offering vegan mayonnaise, which is convenient and flavorsome as well. So, choose the one you love the most.
  • Celery: Celery has a crunchy texture and a salty and slightly tart flavor. It’s the crunch of the celery that makes this wrap very interesting.
  • Red onion: Red onions taste so good in wraps. Just chop them up finely, and they are good to go.
  • Spring onion: To me, spring onion adds an umami flavor. It is a blend of grassy and savory flavor.
  • Garlic: Garlic gives this filing a punch and intensity.
  • Raisins: Raisins in a wrap might be an unusual ingredient, but you will have to try it to find out. Raisins are not just chewy but have a sweet and fruity flavor.
  • Walnuts: The crunch of walnuts is very satisfying. Plus, walnuts are loaded with nutrients and are good for your brain health.
  • Basil leaves: Basil leaves have a savory flavor with a hint of sweetness. They also have a minty and peppery note to them.
  • Coconut flakes: This tropical ingredient has a sweet and nutty flavor. They are a unique ingredient to add to a wrap, but once you do, you will thoroughly enjoy the flavors.
  • Salt: Season the ingredients with salt to make sure everything tastes perfect.

How to make Curried Tofu Wrap?

Making curries tofu wraps is unbelievably easy. Here are the steps you have to follow:

Step 1: first of all, you have to work on marinating and cooking the tofu. For that, start by pressing the tofu. Simply, Place the tofu block on a plate, and place a heavy glass mug or another plate on top. Let it sit for 20 minutes until it is free from water. Cut it into equal cubes.

Step 2: Next, Place the tofu cubes in a large bowl. Add curry powder, onion powder, garlic powder, and salt. Toss so that everything is well combined.

Step 3: Heat coconut oil by placing it in a skillet on medium heat. Once the oil heats up, add tofu cubes. Pan-fry the tofu for 2 to 3 minutes or until the cubes turn golden and crisp up. Take them out of the skillet onto a plate.

Step 4: Now, prepare for the rest of the ingredients of the wrap. Add vegan mayonnaise in a large salad bowl along with chopped celery, red onion, spring onion, garlic, raisins, walnuts, basil leaves, coconut flakes, salt, and tofu. Mix well so that everything is unified.

Step 5: To assemble the wraps, Warm the tortillas and place them on a flat surface. Spoon the tofu and vegetable mixture in the middle of the tortilla. Fold the top half of the tortilla over to meet the bottom half. Then, fold both sides in and tightly roll tortillas to form a wrap.

Step 6: Serve immediately. Enjoy!

Points to remember

there are so many different ways you can customize these tofu wraps. here are a few points that will help you in getting desired results:

  • If you wish the tofu to be extra crispy, add a spoonful of corn starch. It will give tofu that extra crispiness.
  • If you wish to cook tofu without oil, use an air fryer. Air-fried tofu is cooked without oil and is still very crispy.
  • You can use vegan cheese sauce instead of vegan mayonnaise. You can make it easily by blending soaked cashews with a dash of plant-based milk along with your favorite seasonings.
  • Give these curried tofu wraps a punch of flavor by adding pickles, cucumbers, onions, and jalapenos.
  • If you want to eliminate wheat altogether, use lettuce leaves instead of tortillas and create a super healthy option.
  • You can add vegetables like purple cabbage, tomatoes, etc. And create a purple cabbage slaw as well.
  • Add oven-roasted chickpeas for more texture.
  • You can use chickpea hummus or red bell pepper humus as well for more flavor.

Can you make curried tofu wraps in advance?

Why not? Prepare all the components a day before and store them in an air-tight container and refrigerate. Simply warm tortillas, add the ingredients, and wrap. These wraps are your go-to lunch or snack. Also, store the wraps in the refrigerator by wrapping them in aluminum foil and cling film. Reheat and enjoy!
