Sweet Potato Biscuit Ingredients
- Flour – I used gluten-free all-purpose flour but this will work with regular flour
- Baking Powder – aluminum-free baking powder.
- Cinnamon – adds a subtle flavor to your sweet potato flavored biscuits. You can use coriander, cardamom, allspice.
- Salt – sea salt, Kosher salt, or Himalayan pink salt
- Vegan Butter – I used Earth Balance Buttery Spread. See other Vegan Butter Substitutes.
- Cooked Mashed Sweet Potatoes – I used orange flesh sweet potatoes but you can substitute with white or yellow flesh ones.
- Almond Milk – you can use Homemade Almond Milk, use store-bought or use other non-dairy milk.
- Ground Flaxseeds – I love to use golden flaxseeds that I process in a high-speed blender myself but you can use brown ground flaxseeds as well, be mindful that the color of the flaxseeds will show.
- Maple Syrup – gives a mildly sweet taste to the biscuits that are not overpowering. You can use agave nectar instead.
How To Make Sweet Potato Biscuits?
- Preheat the oven at 425°F and keep the baking sheet with parchment paper in the oven.
- Combine mashed sweet potatoes, almond milk, ground flaxseed, and maple syrup in a medium bowl. Set aside.
- Mix the dry ingredients such as flour, baking powder, cinnamon, and salt in a large bowl. Add the chunks of cold vegan butter, then mix into flour mixture until the mixture resembles a coarse meal, using a pastry cutter or your hands.
- Add the mashed sweet potato mixture and fold gently with the dry ingredients to combine.
- To make the dough, sprinkle some flour on the work surface. Put the dough out onto the surface and knead lightly with the palm of your hand until the mixture comes together.

- Pat the dough to about a half-inch thickness. Get a 2-inch-round biscuit cutter tool or glass or biscuit shaper to cut the dough into biscuits. Repeat the process of shaping biscuits until all the dough is used up for making biscuits.
- Place the sweet potato biscuits onto the prepared baking sheet and bake until the tops are slightly golden brown on the bottom and firm to the touch, 15-18 minutes.

What Can You Do with Leftover Biscuits?
If you have any leftover biscuits, then you can freeze them for later, or you can use them by making snacks like,
- Biscuit Crumbs: If the biscuits become stale, you can blend them in a food processor or blender and make crumbs. You can use them in cooking instantly or store them in the freezer in a freezer bag. With this, you can make crispy wedges or use them as a topping of casseroles.
- Croutons: Let the biscuits stale for a few days, cut them into cubes, and toss a little oil over them. Put them in the baking tray and start heating for 5 minutes at 375 degrees F. Flip the biscuits again and heat them for another 5 minutes. When you see the golden and crispy texture, they are ready to eat!
- Toast: Slice the biscuits in half, toast them in the toaster, and spread some jam or butter or scrambled eggs or sautéed mushroom on top.
Can You Store Biscuits in Freezer?
You can easily store frozen biscuits in the freezer for up to 3 months; in that way, you can keep the biscuits fresh for a longer time. At first, lay them in a single layer in the baking tray, cover them with plastic wrap or lid, and freeze the biscuits until solid. After 1 to 2 hours, take out the biscuits from the tray and put them in the freezer bag or freezer-safe container.
How to Reheat Frozen Biscuits?
To reheat the frozen biscuits put them on a baking tray and start baking at 350 degrees (175 degrees C) F for 10 to 15 minutes or until they are well heated.
To defrost the frozen biscuits, then thaw them overnight in the fridge, then you can have the biscuits, or you can reheat them for 5 to 7 minutes at 350 degrees F.
Note: Skipping the defrost process and reheating straight from the freezer in the oven gives the best result.
Tips and Tricks
- Keep all the ingredients cold when you start to mix them. You can keep the mixture in the fridge until you need it.
- Do not overcook the dough, or you will make the biscuit hard, and you will melt the butter before it starts heating.
- Try to avoid excess touching the dough, or your hand’s warmth can melt the butter.
- When you cut the dough with a cutter, use a straight up and down motion.
- Do not spread the biscuits far apart from each other in the oven tray as they like to rise taller together, and it keeps them nice and moist.
