Avocado crema is a good way to increase the nutritional content of food that is enjoyed by children and the family in general. It is perfect for those taco days! It is quicker to make than guacamole and certainly no less amazing.

As a child growing up in Jamaica, avocados were commonly referred to as ‘pear’, because of the shape, which the British colonizers related to the actual pear fruit that they already knew. Pear is usually sliced lengthwise and eaten with things such as Jamaican ginger bulla, a sweet dry bread, or just as a side with dinner.

I, like many of us, absolutely love eating avocados. It is known as a superfood, and has recently soared in popularity. Avocados are grown in tropical or Mediterranean climates, particularly in Central America, and is a common food in the diets of cultures from these areas. With its impressive nutritional value, it is no surprise that it has become so well loved.

The variety that we commonly eat is the Hass avocado, but there are many other kinds, with avocados coming in many shapes and sizes. In Jamaica, where we call avocado “pear”, the variety we have is larger in size and has a lighter green colored skin.

This Caribbean variety also has a pleasant flavor and harder texture. It is eaten cut up as a cool creamy side to spicy curries and jerk, and actually does not mash well. Some people also eat it drizzled with lemon or lime juice and sprinkled with salt.

Tips for Making the Best Avocado Crema

When making avocado crema, there are some important tips to follow. These include:

  1. For the best outcome, ensure that the avocado is ripe. Unripe avocados will not produce the desired texture and flavor. You also do not want to use avocados that are overripe, as it may result in the crema having an undesirable color.
  2. After making the crema, ensure that it is stored in an airtight container to delay browning. You may wish to chill it for a few minutes before serving.
  3. Placing a piece of plastic wrap right on top of the crema before covering it will also assist with delaying the browning (oxidization).
  4. Use the batch you have prepared within 3 days.
  5. You may consider substituting vegan Greek yogurt for the sour cream.
  6. You may add toppings such as cilantro, sun-dried tomatoes, or peppers to your crema to make it look more appealing.
  7. Though fresh lime juice is preferred, if you do not have access to limes, you may opt to use bottled lime juice.
  8. If you are not using it as a dip or spread, you may place the crema in a squeeze bottle for easy application to some of your dishes

Health Benefits Of Avocados

Avocados have many benefits, because they are rich in nutrients, containing roughly about 20 vitamins and minerals.

Some of the vitamins and minerals present in avocados include Vitamin K, folate, Vitamin C, potassium, Vitamin B5 and B6, Vitamin E, magnesium, copper, and manganese. It is also low in carbohydrates, and high in healthy fats.

Bananas are known for their high potassium content, but avocados actually have even more. Potassium is very beneficial to the body, because it assists with reducing high blood pressure. This lessens the risk of heart disease and stroke.

Avocados are rich in fiber. This is beneficial in promoting overall weight loss and metabolic health. This fiber content is part of the reason avocados are perfect to include in your weight loss plan, as they keep you full for longer periods of time.

One way to assist in reducing bad cholesterol and triglyceride levels is through the consumption of avocados. It also aids in improving good cholesterol.

Do you want to improve your eyesight? Avocados contain antioxidants that may assist in protecting your eyes. This is so as they contain carotenoids and studies have shown that they have reduced the risk of cataracts and other eye disorders.

According to some test-tube studies, avocados may help to reduce the risk of prostate cancer and reduce the effects of chemotherapy.

The extract from the avocado may be used to relieve symptoms of arthritis.

Avocado, Fruit or Vegetable?

Avocado is grown on trees, making it a fruit! Even though we commonly associate it with savory dishes, that comes from the cultural influences of our southern neighbors in Mexico.

In other countries, for example in Indonesia and the Philippines, avocadoes are found in milkshakes and ice cream. With its high fat content and creaminess, vegans have discovered its usefulness in desserts and it is slowly becoming more commonly found in sweet recipes as well as savory.

What Do You Eat Avocado Crema With?

Avocado crema may be used for a variety of dishes. Some persons enjoy combining it with other items for tacos and it may even be used to make a sauce, dressing, spread, or dip for your chips and vegetables. It is perfect for adding to Mexican dishes and is a favorite of many. Other ways you may enjoy the crema are on burritos, quesadillas and nachos. Feel free to also use it as a spread for sandwiches or wraps.

One may opt to add some water and extra virgin olive oil to the crema to make it into a sauce or dressing. This sauce may be best served over salads or even added to your favorite vegan burgers.

Thinking of roasting some vegetables? You may wish to consider drizzling some crema over the finished product.

What Does Avocado Crema Taste Like?

Avocado crema is creamy in texture, with a mixture of tangy and salty flavors. Despite its creaminess, usually associated with rich heavy sauces, crema is very light.

Does Avocado Crema Need To Be Refrigerated?

Avocado crema does not need to be refrigerated if it is eaten immediately, which is what I strongly recommend. However, if you want to reserve some for use at a later time, you may place a piece of cling wrap on top of the crema. Make the plastic wrap touch the surface to reduce oxidation, and put it in an airtight container. It is best when used within three days.
