Growing up in Jamaica, we had a lot of mangoes and avocados but we never had them together in the same dish.

I was amazed at how delicious they tasted together in this salsa! The juicy and sweet taste of the mangoes and grape tomatoes with the creamy flesh of the avocados is a perfect combo.

I have been making this mango avocado salsa recipe since then. Another tasty salsa for you to try is my Mango Tomato Salsa.

The varieties of mangoes are countless back home in Jamaica, which I missed while living in Virginia. However, I have been very fortunate to eat a wider variety of mangoes this past summer here in Florida than I had ever had in Virginia. You would be amazed by the different taste, sizes and texture that there are in this seemingly simple fruit.

Where Do Mangos Come From?

Mango is a stone fruit, meaning a fruit that has a large single pit in the middle, that originates from South Asia. It thrives in tropical weather, and through trade and migration has spread to most tropical areas and become a staple.

It is extremely common in the Caribbean, Southern Florida, Central, and South America, Africa, and Pacific Islands, and has become a part of the culture in many of these places.

Actually, most of my family members in Jamaica have mango trees in their backyards. Many in Caribbean immigrants in South Florida also have mango trees, and I love when friends bring me a basket full fresh from their trees.

Because of how common mangos are and how long they have been in many of these countries, there are hundreds of varieties, with wildly differing tastes, textures, appearances, and growth requirements.

Mango is probably one of the most popular “exotic” fruits, as a fruit that can only be grown in a small portion of the country but is a household name. In addition, most of our mangos do not come from Miami or Hawaii, but from Ecuador, Guatemala, Haiti, etc.

Avocado, Fruit, or Vegetable?

Avocado is grown on trees, making it a fruit! Even though we commonly associate it with savory dishes, that comes from the cultural influences of our southern neighbors in Mexico.

In other countries, for example in Indonesia and the Philippines, avocados are found in milkshakes and ice cream. With its high fat content and creaminess, vegans have discovered its usefulness in desserts and it is slowly becoming more commonly found in sweet recipes as well as savory.

Avocado Nutrition Facts

Avocados are found in guacamole, sushi, avocado toast, and sliced on salads and sandwich. You can also find avocados in milkshakes, smoothies, creamy desserts, sauces, and baked as a snack.

Avocados not only so versatile but also so often eaten, because of their dense nutrition. They are high-fat food, but they are full of essential fats that your body needs. Despite being high in fat, avocados have no cholesterol. Oleic acid, a type of fatty acid found in avocado, is actually good for heart health. 

Avocado also has many vitamins and minerals, in particular lots of vitamin K, which is needed for blood clotting and potassium, essential for cell and heart function.

Lastly, and perhaps surprisingly, avocados also have lots of fiber. One serving of avocado has 27% of the recommended daily intake of fiber, which helps with digestion and keeping you full.

With avocados having all of these benefits, plus many more, I believe it is well-deserving of its superfood and trendy status.

Benefits Of Eating Mango

Mango contains lots of vitamin C, nearly all the vitamin A recommended in a day, and many other vitamins and minerals. It also is full of many antioxidants, making it a great choice to prevent inflammation and symptoms of aging.

The vitamins A, C, K, and B complex all improve your immune system, making a mango a day the most delicious supplement you could take during cold and flu season.

Mangos are great for your digestive health because of their fiber content and digestive enzymes. If you suffer from chronic constipation and bloating, adding fiber will help, and again, with mango as your supplement who can complain?

Health Benefits of Vitamin C In Mango

One mango contains roughly twice the amount of vitamin C recommended in a day. This vitamin is vital for your body’s function and benefits so many different systems.

Vitamin C is essential for the production of several compounds, such as collagen, which is good for keeping your skin elastic and is an essential element of connective tissue, muscles, bones, and other organ tissues. Collagen is also necessary for wound healing, meaning that keeping up your vitamin C intake may speed up healing.

It also helps with iron absorption, making it important for anemic individuals who are trying to increase their iron intake through their diet.

The antioxidants in vitamin C are good for preventing cell damage and lowering inflammation. These two benefits can affect or prevent many diseases, including possibly defending against cancer cells.

Vitamin C has many other applications it could be great for. Some examples are diabetes, macular degeneration, allergies, and asthma.

The absolutely most popular benefit of vitamin C is for the common cold and flu. Vitamin C works best if you have it on a daily basis so that your immune system stays strong and can fight off colds.

How To Make Mango Avocado Salsa

For this recipe, choose a mango that is firm, rather than the ones that are very soft and squishy. This dish literally takes 5 minutes to prepare, so it is one of those dishes that you can prepare just before you are about to serve your meal.

  1. Peel and chop mango, avocado, onion, and cilantro.
  2. In a large bowl, combine mango, avocado, onion, lime juice and cilantro in a medium bowl. Add salt to taste, toss, and serve!
  3. Serve immediately or store in a container with a tight lid. Make sure there is very little air space to prevent oxidation (the avocado turning brown).
