What Is Carob?

Carob is a flowering evergreen tree that is native to the Meditteranean, its edible ripe pod contains a sweet pulp that is dried, roasted and ground into a powder.

What is Carob Powder?

Carob powder is the dried, roasted and grounded powder carob. it can be used as a one to one replacement in recipes that has cocoa.

Carob Vs Chocolate

Although carob powder has similarities in looks and flavor to the chocolate. Carob powder is sweeter, lighter in color, caffeine free. Cacao or chocolate has a stronger flavor.

Carob Health Benefits

The main benefit of carob as a chocolate substitute is that carob doesn’t contain caffeine or theobromine. Both of these are stimulants. 

These stimulants can cause adverse effects when eaten in excess, resulting in symptoms such as sleeplessness and anxiety.

Carob has three more times calcium than chocolate and is also lower in fat.

How To Make Carob Energy Bites

They are so easy to make in a food processor, add almonds and coconut and process until finely ground. Scrape down mixture on the sides of the food processor, using a spatula.

Add carob powder and maple syrup and process until mixture begins to stick together. Remove and form mixture into balls.

Coat with shredded coconut or carob powder and serve immediately or refrigerate for 30 minutes.

  • 1 cup almonds
  • 1 cup shredded coconut
  • 1/4 cup carob powder
  • 1/4 cup maple syrup

Instructions

  • Place almonds and coconut in a food processor and process until finely ground. Push down mixture along the sides of the food processor, using a spatula.
  • Add carob powder and maple syrup and process until mixture begins to clump together. Remove from food processor and form into balls by rolling between the palm of your hands.
  • Roll into shredded coconut and serve immediately or refrigerate for 30 minutes.
