This sugar-free carob smoothie is incredibly rich, velvety, sweet, and delicious! Having it in breakfast will give your morning a boost.

Smoothies are delicious and healthy, but something they probably lack is a certain ingredient — Carob. Carob is used predominantly in place of chocolate but it also adds a velvety smooth taste to smoothies.

Carob is great for smoothies because it can be easily blended and doesn’t need much time to be fully incorporated. It also adds a robust, balanced flavor that works well with sweeter fruits, such as bananas or berries. The texture of carob smoothies will remain fairly thick, regardless of the texture of the fruit that you add, which is another pro.

Carob’s ability to soak up the flavor of practically anything blended with it is a huge plus. If you tend to tire of one particular fruit in your smoothie, then simply try blending a new ingredient into your blend, and voila! Your smoothie just got a brand new taste and texture to boot.

Many people who are looking for a healthy, delicious-tasting way to eat their fruits and vegetables, must choose carob. Carob smoothies are a great way to incorporate this superfood into your diet and keep your energy levels high.

What Is Carob?

The carob pod is a tropical tree that produces a sweet, edible pulp. Carob powder often referred to as carob flour, is made from the pulp after it has been dried, roasted, and processed into a powder. The nicest part is that it is mild, sweet, and devoid of caffeine.

It can be used in a variety of delectable recipes, including this Carob Smoothie, as well as in cookies, cake, milk, and anywhere else that cocoa is used.

Carob is free of theobromine and caffeine and a fantastic source of calcium, antioxidants, fiber, and B vitamins.

Carob is an excellent choice for those looking for a healthy alternative to chocolate, which has been linked to various health problems.

Carob Vs. Cacao

As previously mentioned, carob powder is a fantastic substitute for chocolate. In recipes that call for cacao, the powder can essentially be swapped out.

  • Carob does not contain caffeine, although cacao does contain theobromine and methylxanthines. Caffeine is an anxiety and sleeplessness-inducing stimulant. So carob is a good option for people who want to cut caffeine out of their diets.
  • Carob powder tastes sweeter and is milder than cacao.
  • Compared to cocoa, carob powder has three times more calcium.
  • Carob provides more nutrients overall than cacao does, however, the stimulants in cacao have a detrimental impact on the CNS (central nervous system).
  • Carob contains lots of antioxidants and fiber.
  • Carob has three times the amount of calcium than chocolate, making it great for strong bones and teeth.

It is easy to see why carob is experiencing enormous popularity as an alternative to chocolate.

What Does Carob Taste Like?

Carob looks like chocolate, with a similar texture, and acts similarly in recipes, but it doesn’t taste exactly like chocolate. Carob has a unique taste on its own.

It is naturally sweet with a caramel flavor and is less bitter. It is milder in taste than chocolate. The carob powder is similar to cocoa powder in texture and has a toasted flavor. That’s the best way I can put it, but carob actually tastes just like carob.

It is added to drinks, desserts, and other recipes rather than being consumed alone.

Is Carob Healthy?

Yes! Adding carob to your diet can have a positive impact on your health in many ways.

  • Carob contains lots of antioxidants and fiber. Fiber helps keep you fuller for longer, minimize constipation, maintain bowel health, regulate your blood sugar, and reduced cholesterol.
  • It also contains fatty acids, amino acids, and polyphenols, all of which can improve heart health and brain function.
  • Carob helps in depressing your appetite, makes you feel fuller, and thus helps in weight management.
  • The high vitamin content is beneficial for eyes and skin health.
  • Carob has three times the amount of calcium than chocolate, making it great for strong bones and teeth.
  • Carob, like cocoa, contains polyphenols, antioxidants that have been shown to lower the risk of cardiovascular disease.

Where To Buy Carob Powder?

This healthier alternative to chocolate is sold in health food stores and online. As roasted carob is gentle on the stomach and most people think it tastes nicer, I suggest choosing it over raw carob.

Additionally, there are carob bars, carob-covered almonds, rice Krispies, ice cream sandwiches, and carob chips that can be used in place of chocolate chips.

Ingredients For Carob Smoothie

  • Almond Milk: For this recipe, I used unsweetened almond milk but you can use the sweetened kind if you like.
  • Bananas: Bananas are a popular ingredient in smoothies for good reason. They thicken, sweeten, and give a smoothie a creamy feel. That’s why I use it in this recipe. Use ripe frozen bananas; this is necessary for a thick, creamy, and sweet smoothie. And in that case, there is definitely no need to add ice cubes.
  • Peanut butter: One of my all-time favorite ingredients is peanut butter because it is so nutritious and delicious. I know that butter is a little pricey ingredient, but it’s a healthy fat and imparts so much flavor that you only need to use a small quantity. It’s well worth the investment!
  • Carob powder: For the finest flavor and texture, use a roasted one rather than a raw one.

How To Make Carob Smoothie?

Place ingredients in a blender and process until smooth. Pour into a serving glass and enjoy!

Tip for Storing

  • Refrigerate for up to one day in a covered glass jar or bottle.
  • Remember that if smoothies are left to stand, they will all oxidize. That’s fine, but if you want to obtain the maximum nutritional value of the ingredients, it’s best to drink this smoothie FRESH.

Recipe Tips

  • I suggest a high-quality, heavy-duty blender to achieve an appropriately smooth consistency.
  • Avoid over-blending to prevent the mixture from losing its frosty texture.
  • Add 1 tablespoon of pure maple syrup to the smoothie for more sweetness.
  • You can substitute cacao or raw cacao for carob powder.
  • You can use any type of milk you choose in this recipe.
  • Overripe frozen bananas are ideal for smoothies. When they’re a little bit soft to consume on their own, cut them into pieces and freeze them for when you’re craving a banana shake or smoothie.
  • In place of bananas, you can use dates, figs, mango, or (unsweetened) applesauce.
  • Feel free to add some leafy greens such as spinach.
  • It’s optional to use peanut butter. There are a lot of other nut butters out there, but I like to use coconut oil sometimes.
  • Adding cold milk or ice cubes to my smoothies makes them colder, which I enjoy, especially in the summer.
