What Is Sea Moss?
Sea moss, also called Irish moss or red seaweed, grows in tide pools and inlets throughout the year. It is frequently harvested in New England for its gelatinous carbohydrate carrageenan, used in baking and cosmetics.
On the other hand, sea moss is edible on its own and is commonly used to thicken stews and soups. It’s also used in ice cream or other processed foods as a thickening as well as a stabilizing agent. Irish moss is also an excellent vegetarian and vegan substitute for gelatin in dishes and beverages.
Additionally, it is used to manufacture lotions and moisturizers, owing to its extensive medicinal properties.
Sea moss is available in various colors, including brown, yellow, green, purple, red, and black. The most common red type that grows in warmer waters is known as Irish moss.

Sea Moss Nutrient and Health Benefits
Sea moss has a low calorie and fat content and contains a trace of protein. It is a good source of vitamins and minerals, as well as iodine and antioxidants.
Studies on seaweed and algae’s health benefits outnumber those on sea moss. Sea moss grows in similar environments, so some of these health benefits may also be implemented. However, more research on the effects of sea moss is needed.
The following are some of the most important potential advantages of using sea moss:
May Prevent Parkinson’s Disease
Parkinson’s disease slows movement and causes tremors, stiffness, and sluggishness. There is currently no cure. However, preliminary research shows that sea moss can slow down Parkinson’s disease progression.
A study with worms found that sea moss extract decreased the accumulation of -synuclein and decreased slowness of movement and stiffness.
May Support Immune System
Supplemental seaweed was found to improve immune modulation and response in salmon in one study. However, scientists need to conduct additional research to determine whether it also promotes human immunity.
Beneficial For Thyroid Health
Seaweeds are a good source of iodine, a micronutrient required for normal thyroid function. As sea moss is also an excellent natural source of iodine like other seaweeds, it is beneficial for thyroid health.
May Support Gut Health
Seaweeds are high in live bacteria and fiber, both of which lead to a healthier gut microbiome.
May Benefit Heart Health
According to some studies, seaweed lowers LDL cholesterol, thinning blood, and potentially lowering the risk of cardiac disease.
May Help In Weight Loss
Seaweed and microalgae are high in fiber, which can help you feel satisfied and avoid overeating. In addition, fucoxanthin, a compound found in seaweed, has been shown to improve rats’ fat metabolism.
Anecdotal Fertility Benefits
Some people believe that sea moss aids fertility in both men and women and utilizes it as a form of traditional fertility treatment. However, there is no scientific evidence to support this claim. Therefore, scientists must conduct additional research into this.
May Benefit Diabetic
Fucoxanthin, a compound found in seaweed, was effective at lowering blood sugar levels in one study. Another study discovered that a seaweed compound called alginate protected pigs from experiencing blood sugar spikes.
More Does Not Necessarily Imply Better
While sea moss has several beneficial properties, excessive amounts can cause problems. If taken in excess, it may have a detrimental effect on your health. So try to take it in moderation. The recommended daily quantity of sea moss gel is 1-2 tbsp or 4–8 grams.

Sea Moss Smoothie Recipe
Place all ingredients in a high-speed blender and process until smooth.
Transfer to a glass and serve immediately.
Recipe Tips
- While it’s not necessary to soak the dried dates and figs, doing so for about 10 minutes can help soften them, making them easier to blend.
- To make this drink dairy-free, I have used Almond milk. However, you can substitute it with your favorite or any other available plant-based milk, e.g., soy milk, hemp milk, coconut milk, oat milk, etc.
- Some people prefer their smoothies chilled. If so, you can use frozen banana or chill the smoothie in the refrigerator for a while before serving.
- While you can refrigerate any leftovers of this sea moss recipe for a few days, it’s best to enjoy this smoothie fresh. It has a more refreshing flavor when freshly made.
Substitutions and Variations
- Add a mix of fresh or frozen berries (such as strawberries, blueberries, or raspberries) for a burst of fruity flavor and antioxidants.
- Include tropical fruits like mango, pineapple, and coconut milk for a refreshing, exotic twist.
- Boost the nutrition by adding a handful of spinach or kale for a green smoothie packed with vitamins and minerals.
- Add a tablespoon of cocoa powder or chocolate protein powder for a chocolate-flavored variation. You can also use chocolate almond milk for extra richness.
- Include a scoop of your favorite plant-based protein powder (e.g., pea protein, hemp protein) to increase the protein content.
- Add a spoonful of chia seeds, flax seeds, or spirulina powder for an extra nutritional boost.
Storage Tips
Refrigeration: If you have any leftover smoothie, you can store it in an airtight container or a covered glass in the refrigerator. Properly stored, the smoothie should remain fresh for up to 2-3 days.
Shake Before Consumption: Before drinking the refrigerated smoothie, give it a good shake or stir as some separation may occur. This helps distribute the ingredients evenly.
Avoid Freezing: It’s generally not recommended to freeze this smoothie. Freezing may alter the texture and taste, and the sea moss gel may not retain its optimal quality after thawing.
Fresh is Best: Ideally, enjoy the Sea Moss Smoothie fresh, right after blending, to savor its most refreshing flavor and nutrient content.

Hi Michelle, I am a huge supporter of Dr. Sebi, although my hast in committing to the right regiments is like leading the blind. I’ve always been slim to the average-sized person but as time passes, it’s the inside I need healing. The mucus and urinary tract, bladder, stomach, head and muscle aches, blah blah blah. I adorn your works and have pledged to do what needs to be done for my health from the inside out. Blessings
Carla, I’m so happy you are enjoying the benefits of healing the body from the inside out. As we get older it is a struggle for some of us. Keep pushing and all the best.
Thank you for showing how to prepare this healthy sea moss smoothie recipe

This is so informative and precise! I’ve been looking to try sea moss gel but not sure where to start. Thanks!
I purchased my sea moss on Dr. Sebi’s site mainly but Amazon is a go-to as well. I have a friend “Mimi Wellness” who also retails a line of all the natural regiments.
