What do turnips taste like?

For some reason, most people tend to avoid turnips thinking they taste bad. Turnips are root vegetables similar to beets, potatoes, rutabaga. When the turnips are young, they taste mild with a fine sweetness and have a hint of peppery spice. When they age, they taste a bit woodier, but many people love to have this because of the depth of flavor when they are mashed or roasted.

Make sure you choose turnips with a sweeter flavor and pick those that are small to medium. Ideally, choose those as fresh as possible since they get more bitter when they age.

Are Turnips Low-carb Than Potatoes?

Yes! Turnips are way lower carb than potatoes. One cup of cubed turnip has 4.2 carbohydrates, whereas potatoes have 13.5 g. Also, turnips are similar to potatoes, which will be an amazing choice for preparing fries, diced hash brown, pureed, and roasted.

How to Select a Perfect Turnip?

When you are shopping for turnips in-store or market, follow these steps:

  • Select those turnips with smooth skin and the correct color (white at the bottom and purple on the top).
  • These veggies need to be firm and heavy with a sweet aroma.
  • Smaller-sized turnips should have a sweeter and tender flavor, whereas bigger ones have an earthy, bitter, and crisp flavor.
  • Do not ignore the turnips with their greens attached, and they are easily edible via salads or stews.

How to Store Turnips?

For small roots or younger turnips, keep them tightly wrapped in the refrigerator for up to 2 to 3 weeks.  For large and mature turnips, sort the cut and blemish ones. They will stay fresh in the refrigerator for up to three weeks or so.

Spread the turnips you want to store for a longer time. Remove the upper green part and root from the turnip. Rinse off all the soil and dirt with water. Place them in a covered container or box and cover them with a damp cloth. Keep the container in a cool, dark, unheated garage or basements and check frequently to see if they are not losing quality or not.

Prepare the turnips if you want to keep them for longer by peeling, washing, and cutting them into cubes, then boil them for two minutes. Chill them in cold water and freeze them in the freezer bag for 8 to 10 months.

How to Fry Turnips in Oven?

Oven frying has countless beneficial sides for people who avoid extra calories and fats. You can enjoy tender on the inside, crispy on outside experience, and mouth-watering experience with the oven. Here are the process of cooking these amazing fries in the oven,

  • Place the seasoned turnips on the parchment baking sheet.
  • Start roasting then at 450 degrees for 20 to 25 minutes.

Key Tips and Tricks

  • Be sure to cut the turnips into the same size. If they are not the same size they will cook unevenly, and some pieces will remain soggy.
  • Flip the turnip cubes after frying for about 5 to 7 minutes to ensure they are evenly fried on every side.
  • Be sure to cook them in batches in a single layer to get even results. If they are close to each other then they will generate steam which will caramelize around the edges and become soggy.
  • Be careful not to overcook the turnip cubes as they will not remain crispy but become mushy.
  • Different air fryer models cook at varying temperatures. You may need to adjust the temperature and preheating options accordingly.
