This Cabbage Dumplings in Gravy (Vegan, Gluten-Free) is easy to prepare and flavorful. Scrumptious shredded cabbage, seasoned with spicy aromatics, formed into balls and baked. Then served smothered in a spicy and flavorful tomato curry gravy.

How To Make Cabbage Dumplings in Gravy (Vegan, Gluten-Free)

This recipe is so amazing it takes cabbage to another level. Just like my Cabbage Curry and my Cabbage Soup recipe, so simple yet so delicious.

This recipe is my version of Cabbage Kofta that I had at an Indian restaurant years ago. You may be asking what is a kofta? A kofta is a meatball or vegetable ball served with a spicy curry/gravy.

To make Cabbage Dumplings in Gravy (Vegan, Gluten-Free), I processed cabbage in a food processor. I then sauteed it with onion, garlic, cumin, and coriander. Added chickpea flour and form into a ball, bake in the oven.

Meanwhile, I prepared the curry gravy, I decided to update the recipe and use curry powder instead of the spices I had in the original recipe. I used coconut milk, cashew blended with water for a really creamy gravy.

Note: If you prefer nut-free gravy,  use chickpea flour instead. If you don't mind then leave the chickpea flour out of the gravy and blend cashews with water to add at the end to thicken.

Cabbage Dumplings/Balls

For The Gravy


  1. Place cabbage in a food processor and pulse until finely shredded. Transfer shredded cabbage into a bowl and set aside. Preheat oven 400ºF/200ºC. Lightly grease a baking sheet and set aside.
  2. Heat oil in a skillet over medium heat, add onion, garlic and cook until onion is soft. Stir in coriander, cumin and cook for another minute. Add shredded cabbage and cook, while stirring, for about 5 minutes, or until cabbage is tender.
  3. Season with salt to taste. Transfer cabbage to a bowl and allow to cool. Stir in chickpea flour and mix well to form a dough. You may need to add water if the dough isn't holding together.
  4. Shape cabbage dough into equal sized balls.Transfer to a baking sheet and bake for 25- 30 minutes, turning after 15 minutes. Meanwhile, prepare the gravy.

To Prepare The Gravy

  1. Heat oil or water in a large saucepan on medium heat, add onion and cook until soft, about 4 minutes. Add garlic and ginger, cook for about 1 minute. Stir in tomatoes and cook for another 2 minutes.
  2. Add curry powder, paprika, ( add 1/4 cup chickpea flour only if nut-free) stirring constantly for about 1 minute. Stir in coconut milk, water, cayenne and salt to taste. Cover saucepan and bring to a boil.
  3. Reduce to simmer for about 10 minutes, meanwhile blend cashews with water. Add cashew mixture to curry gravy and stir. Cook until thicken. Turn off heat, add Cabbage Dumplings and stir. Garnish with cilantro leaves.
  4. Delicious served with rice or potatoes.

    This was amazing. I tried it twice! The sauce is awesome; I left out the cumin because I was unable to source that but it was creamy and delicious and others enjoyed.

      Make your own with the recipe and use 2 teaspoons.
      1 teaspoon turmeric
      1 teaspoon coriander
      1/2 teaspoon cumin
      1/2 teaspoon cardamom

    So delicious! Made this for my hubby and 2 yr old and they loved it too. That sauce is wonderful. I served it with a cucumber salad. I didn’t have chickpea flour so subbed with almond flour. They were a little fragile but still held their shape.

    Made this last night and my family are still raving about it today!
    I used chinese cabbage and it worked very well, the dumplings were so flavoursome.

    If I’m nut-free, do I sub the cashew mixture with 1/4 cup chickpea flour only or do I also add the 1/2 cup water to the flour?

      Karen, you would mix the chickpea flour with the 1/2 cup water until lumps are removed and then add it to the rest of gravy.

    I thought these looked delicious and wondered about them while I was making them, feeling a bit skeptical. They are GREAT! The sauce is AMAZING. I was surprised that the dumplings had such a dough-like quality considering they are almost all cabbage. One thing, the average palate may not be able to tolerate the full heat. I cut it in half because I wasn’t the only one eating these and only did 1 tsp of curry and 1/8 of cayenne. Also, it makes a lot of sauce so I think maybe one could either cut it in half or make twice the dumplings. This is comfort food at its best.

        So good! How big is a serving size? I doubled the dumplings and still only had about 14 dumplings. They were not enormous either. What did I do wrong.
