Is Celery Juice Good For You?

Unlike chewing celery stalks or adding it to smoothies or combining it in soups and other dishes, blending the celery with water and straining off the pulp leaves you with a more concentrated drink. It is high in essential vitamins and minerals, however, without the fiber.

Incorporating celery juice as part of a healthy diet can tremendously boost your health in some way.

According to research, consuming celery, including celery juice, can offer numerous health benefits, including anti-inflammatory, antifungal, and antibacterial benefits.

Here is why it could be good for you:

1.   Highly Nutritious

Celery juice is a concentration of the many nutrients found in celery.

These include:

  • Zinc
  • Calcium
  • Magnesium
  • Vitamin A, C
  • Vitamin K
  • Folate
  • Copper
  • Biotin
  • Magnesium
  • Phosphorus
  • Potassium
  • Sodium
  • Calcium
  • Protein

It’s also rich in antioxidants and some B vitamins.

2.   May offer anti-cancer benefits.

Celery juice contains apigenin, a compound that has traditionally been used in Chinese medicine as an anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antiviral, and antibacterial agent.

Antioxidants prevent cancer by neutralizing free radicals that may undergo oxidative stress in the body, leading to cell mutations that may cause cancer.

Also, apigenin has been found to kill cancer cells and prevent their proliferation.

Celery also contains luteolin, a type of flavonoid that hinders the replication of cancer cells and deprives them of the nutrition they need to grow and multiply. Read More.

3.   Lowers blood pressure

High blood pressure is a major culprit for heart disease and its complications. If uncontrolled, it can lead to memory loss, irritability, heart failure, heart attack, stroke, and damage to blood vessels supplying important organs like the kidneys.

Luckily, drinking celery as part of a healthy routine may help bring the numbers down. Celery juice contains phthalides, a phytochemical that relaxes arterial walls causing smooth blood flow with decreased blood pressure.

It is also high in potassium, which helps regulate blood pressure, reduce water retention, and protect against stroke. Read More.

4.   Strengthens bones

Daily intake of fresh celery juice will increase your vitamin K intake, enhancing bone metabolism and protecting against osteoporosis.

Silicon and calcium in celery may also strengthen the bones and aid bone cell regeneration.

In addition, calcium is essential for many other reasons, including the proper functioning of heart muscles and nerves. Read More.

5.   Reduces cholesterol levels

Studies were done on 3-n-butylphthalide (3nB), a compound in celery showed that it could lower blood cholesterol and reduce arterial plaque formation.

6.   It’s hydrating

Staying hydrated is an important part of maintaining a healthy body. Optimal hydration will ensure healthy skin, aid proper digestion and bowel moments, and regulate blood pressure and body temperature. It also helps in brain function, kidney health, and flushing out of toxins and waste products.

Celery juice is one of those drinks that can keep you hydrated without necessarily drinking water. It provides almost half a cup (118 ml) of water in every cup serving.

7.   Low in calories

Celery juice can make a healthy and quick snack because of its low sugar low-calorie content.

Sixteen ounces (475 ml) of celery juice give you 85 calories, which is way better than most fruit juices or energy drinks high in sugar.

The low-calorie content may also aid weight loss by promoting fullness when taken before a meal.

8.   Reduces inflammation

Chronic inflammation is the root cause of many diseases, including osteoporosis, arthritis, diabetes, heart disease, and bowel conditions.

But consuming celery juice may help lower the risk of these conditions.

Celery juice is high in flavonoids, a type of phytonutrient with antioxidant but also anti-inflammatory properties.

A high intake of flavonoid-containing foods has been shown to lower the risk of diabetes, heart disease, and cancer.

It also contains 25 more anti-inflammatory compounds that help protect the body against inflammation.

Celery Juice Side Effects:

Although celery juice is generally nutritious and good for your health, there are few things you should put in mind.

1.   Digestive problems

Celery juice has been associated with diarrhea in some individuals. This is because it contains high levels of mannitol, a type of sugar that pulls water into your digestive tract, causing diarrhea.

This side effect may disappear over time as the body adapts but may worsen in the case of other digestive problems like irritable bowel syndrome.

2.   It’s low in fiber

Blending and straining celery may result in a more nutrient-dense drink; however, fiber is another important nutrient that will help regulate your blood sugar, promote a healthy gut, and slow the process of digestion.

Without the fiber, celery juice will be quickly digested, leaving you hungry with the need to snack.

So, if you’re going to drink this juice, let it be a complimentary drink to an already healthy meal.

When To Drink Celery Juice?

It is best to drink celery juice first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. This will ensure that the nutrients get absorbed through the digestive system and into the bloodstream immediately. Allow for the juice to digest properly, about 30 minutes before you eat or drink.

Finally

Celery drink is one of the healthiest drinks to have in your diet. It’s rich in important minerals, vitamins, and antioxidants.

Drinking celery juice regularly may help keep you hydrated, reduce inflammation, lower your risk of cancer, aid weight loss, strengthen your bones, and lower cholesterol.

However, since this juice has been stripped off of fiber, consuming it as a substitute for certain meals may not be ideal since you’re likely to feel hungry and snack after some time. So ensure your diet is full of fiber-rich foods.

Also, keep in mind that too much of anything is not good for you. So take it in moderation, keeping in mind excessive consumption may result in unpleasant digestive side effects like diarrhea, especially if you struggle with any gut issues.

And as always, in case of a medical condition, be sure to consult with your doctor to find out whether it is good for you or not.
