I finally decided to share my tofu bacon recipe after I made it for my hubby and he kept saying how delicious it was. My Coconut Bacon is also a big hit. Serve tofu bacon in sandwiches, diced in salads, with pasta, soups, stews, etc.

Tofu Bacon

I can’t say I grew up eating bacon because we didn’t eat pork, but I have had turkey bacon before going vegan and I didn’t like it. I must say I prefer the vegan versions of bacon.

Irresistible tofu bacon is so tasty, it is easy to prepare and when added to other dishes, tofu bacon really makes them pop. The combination of smoked paprika, sesame oil, hickory smoke, and Bragg’s Liquid Aminos.

This flavorful tofu bacon recipe is so easy to bake, slices of tofu dipped in a smoky, slightly sweet marinade and baked until crispy. It is a delicious meatless bacon substitute that the entire family will love.

Tofu Bacon Ingredients

  • Tofu – I used super firm tofu but extra-firm tofu that has been pressed.
  • Bragg’s Liquid Aminos – has a great flavor but you can substitute with Tamari or soy sauce.
  • Maple Syrup – add a slightly sweet taste.
  • Nutritional Yeast Flakes – great for flavor, yeast flakes are sold in health food stores.
  • Roasted Sesame Oil – adds to the smoky flavor.
  • Smoked Paprika – gives a great color and smoky flavor.
  • Onion powder and Garlic Powder – balances the flavors.
  • Liquid Smoke – Makes all the other smoky flavor pop. A little goes a long way.

How To Make Tofu Bacon?

  1. Remove tofu from the packaging.
  2. If you are using extra-firm tofu, press water from tofu by wrapping it in a clean dishtowel or paper towel.
  3.  Place wrapped tofu on a plate and top with a heavy object like a pot or books for about 20 minutes.
  4. Remove the cloth and transfer tofu unto a cutting board.
  5. If using the oven: preheat oven 400 degrees F. Prepare a baking sheet by lining it with parchment paper and lightly spraying it with cooking oil.
  6. Combine marinade ingredients in a bowl, Bragg’s Liquid Aminos, maple syrup, nutritional yeast flakes, sesame oil, smoked paprika, onion powder, garlic powder, liquid smoke. Mix well.
  7. Cut tofu into thin slices about 1/8 inch thickness. Dip tofu into the marinade and place on the baking sheet.
  8. Bake for 20 minutes, turn over slices, and bake for another 20 minutes or until tofu slices are beginning to crisp on the edges.
  9. If using stovetop method: heat 1 tablespoon oil in a large non-stick skillet over medium-high heat. Add tofu slices and cook until edges are golden brown.
  10. Flip tofu over and cook until the other side is brown. Make sure to keep on eye on the tofu slices so they won’t burn.
  11. The slices will continue to crisp up as they cool.
