These gluten-free, vegan Apple Hand Pies are quick and easy to make. Start with preparing the apple filling, which is quite easy to prepare (it takes only 10 minutes).

Then come to the crust. Even though you can use store-bought pie crust, I highly suggest making your own because homemade pie crust is so much better!

It has an incredible buttery, flaky texture and tastes incredible, plus it’s vegan and made entirely of plant-based ingredients. Don’t be intimidated by the pastry dough; it’s quite simple to make with this recipe. It comes together in less than 5 minutes.

How to Make Gluten-Free Vegan Apple Hand Pie?

You probably already have most of this recipe’s ingredients in your pantry. Here is the detailed list of ingredients and steps to follow:

ingredients for apple hand pie

Ingredients

For Filling

  • 2 apples, peeled and chopped ( I used fuji apples)
  • 1 tablespoon vegan butter
  • ⅓ cup organic cane sugar
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch
  • 1 tablespoon water

For The Crust

  • 2 cups oat flour
  • ¼ cup tapioca flour
  • ¼ cup potato starch
  • 2 tablespoons cane sugar
  • 1 tablespoon ground flax seeds
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon xanthan gum
  • ½ cup Vegan Butter, cubed
  • ½ cup almond milk

Instruction

For the Filling

  1. Add the vegan butter in a saucepan over medium heat,
  2. Add the apples, cane sugar, lemon juice, and cinnamon. Cook until the apples are soft, about 10 minutes.
  3. Combine cornstarch and water in a small bowl and add to the apple. Stir until the sauce thickens. Allow the filling to cool.

For The Crust

  1. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. Line the baking sheet with parchment paper, set it aside.
  2. Place oat flour, tapioca starch, potato starch, cane sugar, ground flaxseeds, baking powder, salt, xanthan gum in a large bowl and mix.
  3. Add the vegan butter and knead to form dough into the consistency of breadcrumbs.
  4. Add almond milk and knead to form a smooth dough ball.
  1. Divide the dough into 6 pieces and roll into 6 balls. Roll out each ball between two sheets of parchment paper, about 4 inches long and ⅛ inch thickness.
  2. Remove the top parchment paper. Add about 1 tablespoon of the cooled apple pie filling in the center of each rolled-out dough. Fold over the dough halfway to cover the filling.

  1. Press the edge of the hand pie with a fork to seal. Cut slits in on top of the pies to allow the steam to escape and transfer to the prepared baking sheet.
  2. Repeat until all the hand pies are made. Then, place in a single layer on a baking sheet and bake for about 30 minutes.

Recipe Notes

  • I used fuji apples; however, you can use any apple you like.
  • In this simple hand pie recipe, I used organic cane sugar. However, maple syrup, coconut sugar, and brown sugar can all be used interchangeably.
  • Let the apple pie filling cool completely before filling the hand pies. Warm filling softens the dough, making it more difficult to shape mini pies.
  • You can make your apple pie filling up to 3 days in advance. Refrigerate it airtight until ready to bake.
  • Before using the dough, put it in the refrigerator for at least 1/2 hour because it is easier to handle when cold. You can store it in the refrigerator for up to two days or freeze it for future use.
  • Roll, fill and crimp the hand pies quickly. When the dough becomes warm, it becomes difficult to work with. If it gets warm, just put it in the refrigerator for a few minutes to cool and bring it back to continue.

I hope you enjoy this apple hand pie recipe. Because it is vegan, egg & dairy-free, super simple, easy to prepare, refined sugar-free, tastes like a small apple pie, and so delicious!
