What Are Tater Tots?

Tater tots are cute little cylindrical, pillowy, and crispy potato treats made from shredded potatoes that are generally deep-fried.

What Is The History Of Tater Tots?

  1. Nephi Grigg, Ross Erin Butler Sr., and Golden Grigg of the American frozen food firm Ore-Ida came up with the idea for tater tots in 1953 while attempting to come up with a use for leftover potato slices. The potato slices were diced, flour and seasonings were added, and then the mixture was extruded through holes and cut into pieces. In 1956, the item made its debut as a commercial offering in shops.

Although Ore-Ida, a Heinz subsidiary since 1965, owns the trademark on the name “Tater Tot,” the term has grown so closely linked with the food that it is now commonly used as a common term as well. Potato is abbreviated as “tater.”

The term “Tater Tot” was coined in the 1950s and quickly trademarked by a company’s research committee member who came up with an alliterative name using a thesaurus.

According to Iowa State University advertising lectures, the product was initially relatively cheap and customers were hesitant to acquire it due to the lack of perceived value. But when the price went up, more people started purchasing it. Tater Tot consumption in the United States is currently estimated at 70,000,000 pounds (32,000,000 kg), or 3,710,000,000 Tots annually.

Fairly recently, some vegetable producers (like the Green Giant brand) launched “veggie tots,” … aim to replace the potato with more nutritious veggies (e.g. cauliflower or broccoli).

    Ingredients For Vegan Tater Tots

    • Potatoes: Any potato works great for this recipe, I used a waxy red skin potato.
    • Onion: Red or yellow whatever onions are available
    • Nutritional Yeast Flakes: Nutritional yeast flakes for cheesy flavor and Vitamin B12.
    • Cayenne Pepper: It imparts a more neutral “peppery” flavor.
    • Salt: Salt brings the flavors together and makes the recipe complete.
    • Olive Oil: I used olive oil. Why? Because it is healthy. However, you can use your favorite or available one.

    How Are Tater Tots Made?

    1. Scrub potatoes and cook in boiling water until tender, about 20 minutes. When still warm, allowing it to cool enough so you can handle it, remove the peel and discard.
    2. Using a box grater, finely grate potato and place in a large bowl. Gently stir in minced onion, yeast flakes, sea salt, and cayenne pepper.
    3. Preheat the oven to 425 F. Take a small amount, about a teaspoon, and form into a cylindrical shape or a ball and place on the prepared baking sheet.

  •  Pro Tips
    • Peel the potatoes.
    • Squeeze the extra moisture out.
    • Before baking, ensure that the oven is fully preheated.
    • Serve them while they’re still hot and crispy.

Variations

You can use any type of potato you choose, but what gives your tots flavor also depends on the seasoning and any additional ingredients you use.

  • For example, if you want a spicy tot, you could add adobo chili sauce, Sriracha, or red pepper flakes.
  • Another suggestion is to add lemon zest and fresh dill or rosemary and garlic for a different flavor.

No matter whatever seasonings you select, the tots bake within and absorb the flavors.

How To Serve Up Your Vegan Tater Tots?

Even though these fantastic tots taste excellent on their own, you might choose to make this dish into a substantial supper. It is possible that eating too much of a wonderful thing can often induce stomach upset, so it is better to keep things in balance with some nutritious, plant-based meals.

Make Wraps: You can use your crispy tots as a filler in butter lettuce leaves, making a vegan cheeseburger. Place some tater tots in the center, top with your preferred sauce, and enjoy. Yum…

Always Add Veggies: Vegetables are an essential part of any meal, especially if you are trying to lose weight or maintain your current weight.

Serve Along With Soup: You can also serve these potato puffs with lentil and vegetable soup to obtain even more fiber and keep you fuller for longer after eating them. Your stomach will definitely feel satisfied after eating our Instant Pot soup.

Can I Freeze Tater Tots?

You can, indeed! After forming the Tater Tots, set them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Put it in the freezer.

Use a freezer bag to store them after they’ve been frozen. Tater tots can be frozen for 4-6 months, although the flavors start to disappear after a few months.

How Do I Cook Frozen Tater Tots?

You have the option of baking or frying them. They can be prepared directly from the freezer for both methods. Baking them was more successful for me.

When I tried to fry them, they didn’t cook evenly, and they were almost falling apart.
