Ingredient breakdown

Making vegan pinwheels is super easy. You don’t need over-the-top ingredients. You can make these with simple ingredients that are usually always available in a kitchen pantry. Here is a list of every ingredient you need for this recipe:

Gluten-Free Vegan Spinach Wraps – can be purchased at major supermarkets or health food stores.

For the filling:

  • Hummus: Hummus is creamy and utterly delicious. Made from chickpeas, garlic, tahini, lemon juice, and olives, this Mediterranean dip is loaded with nutrients and is an amazing substitute for vegan mayonnaise or vegan cream. The best thing about hummus is that it is super easy to make. You just have to blend these ingredients together, and that’s it. Furthermore, you can also use premade hummus. Either way, it is tasteful, gives a delicious flavor and a creamy, rich texture. See How To Make The Best Homemade Hummus and My Best Hummus Recipes.
  • Carrot: Carrots add sweetness and crunch to these wraps. These are loaded with vitamins and also add a vibrant color. Shredding the carrots will make them spread evenly in the vegan pinwheel. Thus, you can taste them in every bite.
  • Cabbage: Cabbage adds a very satisfying crunch to the vegan pinwheel. When you shred it thinly, you can scatter it all across the wrap’s base.
  • Red bell pepper: Adding red bell pepper will bring out a fruity flavor. You can also use green or yellow bell peppers.

Why use spinach wraps?

Although the traditional pinwheels use corn or flour tortillas, there are so many reasons for you to use spinach wraps. Here are a few to name:

  • Spinach wraps are super healthy. Because of the spinach puree in them, they are loaded with iron, calcium, Vitamin A, vitamin C, Vitamin K1, fiber, etc. As a result, it offers several health benefits.
  • You can make these wraps both with and without gluten.
  • These wraps are gluten-free and vegan! All the ingredients are 100% plant-based.
  • The green color of these wraps that come from spinach puree makes them visually appealing. Thus, these wraps offer a smart way to add leafy greens to your diet.
  • These wraps are kid-friendly. And if your kids don’t really like spinach, this is an amazing way to incorporate it into their diet.
  • These wraps are tasteful. You get a subtle flavor of spinach in every bite.

Variation ideas

Although I have used cabbage, bell peppers, and carrots in this wrap along with hummus, buts it’s not the only thing you can add to these wraps. The beauty of vegan pinwheels is that you can customize them according to your liking. Add whatever vegetables you love and pair them with different sauces and dips. Here are a few amazing ideas to customize vegan pinwheels:

  • Vegan cheese: Make a vegan cheese sauce using soaked cashews, garlic, lemon, and spices. Spread it instead of hummus. This vegan cheese sauce is rich, creamy, and delicious.
  • Purple cabbage: Use purple cabbage instead of regular cabbage for a burst of fresh colors and to make the pinwheels visually more appealing.
  • Vegan mayonnaise: You can also use vegan mayonnaise along with vegan cheese. The two give creamy goodness perfect for these pinwheels.
  • Sautéed mushrooms: If you love mushrooms, add them to the pinwheels. Sauté them and use them. You can also cook them with herbs to add more flavors.
  • Sun-dried tomatoes: Sun-dried tomatoes are delicious and have a unique texture. Adding them will bring an Italian flavor to this dish.
  • Celery: Finely chopped celery is not just healthy but also adds flavor and a very satisfying crunch.
  • Basil: A few basil leaves add so much flavor to these pinwheels.
  • Spices: You can sprinkle paprika, cumin, garlic salt, etc., or mix the spices in sauce to add more flavor to these vegan pinwheels.

How To Make Vegan Pinwheels

Place a spinach wrap on a working station of a large plate.

Spoon hummus on it and spread across the surface of the wrap.

Place shredded cabbage, carrots, and diced bell pepper all across the wrap’s surface.

Start rolling the wrap from one end tightly until the opposite end is reached.

Place the wrap on a parchment-lined baking tray seam side down, and place the tray in the refrigerator for about 2 hours.

Take the wraps out of the refrigerator and trim the ends. Using a sharp knife, cut the wraps into equal sizes.

Arrange the pinwheels on a platter and serve.

Tips for perfect rolled pinwheels

To ensure the pinwheels hold their shape and have a perfect texture, here are a few tips you should remember:

  • When making vegan pinwheels, make sure the wraps you are using are fresh. If they are a day old, just warm them up a bit so that they are softened. Using dry wraps will result in a mess, not a pinwheel.
  • Make sure the vegetables are not in big chunks rather are very finely shredded or chopped. Big chunks can be difficult to handle, and the wraps can be torn apart while rolling.
  • Make sure you roll the wraps tightly from the beginning. Loosely rolled pinwheel will fall apart instantly.
  • While refrigerating, keep the seam side downwards so that it stays in place and holds shape.
  • When cutting the pinwheels, use a serrated knife instead of a regular knife with a flat edge.

How to store vegan pinwheels?

For the vegan pinwheels to hold shape and stay fresh, I recommend you wrap them tightly in plastic wrap or aluminum foil and refrigerate them. They will last for up to 2 days.

Moreover, you can also freeze pinwheels. However, when you defrost them, they might get soggy because of the moisture. So, I recommend you don’t freeze them. Because the recipe is super easy to follow, you can make them at least 24 hours before servings and enjoy.
