Potatoes are a staple side dish in every house, as they pair so well with almost every dish. The addition of potatoes to any dish, whether it be veggies or a casserole, makes the dish much more hearty.

Coupled with the fact that I love Crispy Potato Wedges, Rosemary Roasted Potatoes, Duchess Potatoes, and even French fries, I think these crispy smashed potato bites are my new favorite dish. They have magnificently crispy skins, comfortingly creamy centers, and a flavor that no one could possibly ever get enough of, in my opinion.

These smashed potato bites are very easy to make. It only requires boiling some small potatoes, smashing them with a jar or glass, seasoning, and air frying!

Although these smashed potato bites aren’t the quickest potato recipe (you need to boil the potatoes till tender, smash them, and then air fry them), they’re not difficult to prepare. 

These smashed potatoes are a tasty way to use up any extra potatoes stashed in your pantry. All can enjoy them because they are vegan and gluten-free.

Brunch or dinner is more enjoyable with these smashed potato bites. They’re also great when you want some crispy potatoes but don’t want to eat French fries. If a hefty salad for supper feels too spartan, they go great with it.

They are conveniently ideal for a variety of occasions. They would make a delicious game day snack when paired with Chipotle Lime Crema. If you added some fresh herbs, they would make a delicious side dish for Thanksgiving. That’s great!

What’s The Difference Between Smashed and Mashed Potatoes?

Even though these two recipes only differ by one letter, they are very different. Potatoes are first boiled until they are quite soft before being mashed or smashed. What happens after boiling is what distinguishes the two.

To make smooth mashed potatoes, milk, butter, seasoning, and sometimes sour cream are added. On the other hand, smashed potatoes are formed into a thin patty and baked till crispy after being sprinkled with some oil and seasoning.

  • Potatoes – Rather than large potatoes, pick small ones. This recipe works well with any type of potato, including russet potatoes. However, for crispy potatoes, choose golf ball-sized potatoes.

Smaller potatoes are typically red or yellow in color. Both are good, but I preferred the red-skinned potato since they have a better taste.

  • Salt A pinch of salt will help to balance the flavors. You can use any type of salt which is available to you.
  • Crushed red pepper – Adding crushed red pepper will help get some heat and savory flavor.
  • Olive oil – You can use any oil, but I used olive oil. Olive oil is excellent for making delectable and nutritious dishes. It’s rich in antioxidants, minerals, essential fatty acids, and vitamins.

  • Par boil baby potatoes.
  • Smash these baby potatoes.
  • Sprinkle salt on crushed red chilies and olive oil.
  • Air fry these smashed potatoes at 380 for 20 minutes or until crispy.

Recipe Notes

  • Make sure the sweet potatoes are properly washed and peeled before you start cutting them up. You may eat them with or without the skin, but I prefer them with skin.
  • Brush olive oil on the air fryer basket. I typically use parchment paper because it has a nonstick surface and is easy to clean, but baking the potatoes on an oiled surface makes them even crispier. If you ask me, the cleanup is worthwhile.
  • Leave enough space between each potato so that they crisp well. You’ll probably have to cook in batches if you have a small air fryer. I suggest cooking in multiple batches for the crispiest results.

Add-On

  • Add some fresh or dried herbs for greater flavor.
  • Add some onion and garlic powder. These are two magical ingredients. They give potatoes a mild savory flavor that elevates them!
  • I like my crispy smashed potato bites without the cheese. However, you could always top them with a sprinkle of cheese, like grated Parmesan, feta, goat cheese, or even some crumbled feta.
  • Make use of butter and a little oil. Oil+butter guarantees better and more consistent browning and crispiness. Because butter burns at high temperatures in the oven, it cannot be used alone.

Storage Suggestions

Smashed potato bites may go mushy in the fridge, so I suggest eating them as soon as possible. However, if you have any leftovers, you can store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3- 5 days.

To reheat, microwave them for 60 seconds and top them with cheese if preferred. However, keep in mind that they won’t be as crisp as they would be if you ate them straight after air frying. But they’ll be delicious after reheating. To maintain some crunch, you might reheat them in the oven or air fryer.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound baby potatoes
  • 1/4 teaspoon red chilis crushed or pinch of cayenne pepper

Instructions

  • Boil the potatoes in salted water until they are fork-tender, about 15 minutes. Drain and let cool.
