There are so many delicious ways to serve this homemade Vegan Sausage Gravy! You will love it with Vegan Grits Recipe, Vegan Biscuit, or Vegan Breakfast Skillet Potatoes.

Here is in South, sausage gravy is one of those comfort dishes like Mac And Cheese. It is an absolute favorite!

I love to prepare my veggie sausage gravy using my Gluten-Free Vegan Sausage recipe and non-dairy milk for a quick and easy vegan breakfast, poured over biscuits or Vegan Corn Grits. However, you can also use any store-bought vegan sausages.

This is the best vegan sausage gravy recipe! It is so easy to prepare. All you do is sauté the sausage, remove and cut sausages into pieces, add the flour and nutritional yeast flakes and cook. Stir in the almond milk and salt, and then cook until it’s thickened. Add the sausage and you’re done!

You can add extra herbs to your gravy, although it tastes great as is. Thyme, sage, parsley, rosemary, and basil are wonderful. Prepare gravy the day before, and when you are ready to serve, add a little non-dairy milk or vegetable broth to reheat because the gravy will have thickened as chilled.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

  • Easy and Quick: This recipe is simple and doesn’t require a lot of time or complicated cooking techniques.

Ingredients Needed

  • Vegan Sausage  – Make a homemade Gluten-Free Vegan Sausage, or use store-bought sausage. I love Lightlife Vegetarian Sausage (Gluten-Free, Vegan), Lightlife Gimme Lean Sausage (Vegan), Beyond Meat Beyond Sausage (Gluten-Free, Vegan), and Field Roast Sausage.
  • Olive Oil – Used for sauteing sausages but you can cook sausage with vegetable broth and add the remaining ingredients and whisk constantly until thicken for an oil-free version.
  • Flour – I used all-purpose gluten-free flour (Krusteaz Brand)
  • Unsweetened Almond Milk – You can use your favorite unsweetened non-dairy milk including rice milk, oat milk, or hemp milk.
  • Nutritional Yeast Flakes – Added for flavor, it is also added to a vegan diet for B12 supplementation.
  • Salt – Add salt to taste, I used Himalayan pink salt.

How To Make Vegan Sausage Gravy

  1. Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add sausage and cook until golden brown, turning on all sides,  about 10 minutes.
  2. Remove sausage and cut into small pieces if whole, meanwhile, adds the flour, nutritional yeast flakes and cook for about 2 minutes, stirring often.
  3. Add almond milk and cook gravy until thickened, whisking constantly to avoid any lumps. Add sausage, salt to taste and stir.
  4. Serve immediately over biscuits, grits or potatoes.

Expert Tips

  • When cooking the sausages, ensure they are cooked until golden brown on all sides. This will enhance the flavor and texture of the vegan country gravy.
  • If your gravy turns out too thick, you can add a little more almond milk to reach your desired thickness. Conversely, if it’s too thin, you can cook it a bit longer to thicken.
  • While the recipe includes salt, taste the gravy and adjust the seasoning as needed. Remember that sausages can vary in saltiness, so start with a little salt and add more if necessary.

Variations and Substitutions

  • Oil-Free Option: If you prefer an oil-free version, you can cook the sausages with vegetable broth instead of olive oil. This reduces the fat content in the recipe.
  • Herb and Seasoning Variations: Customize the flavor of your gravy by adding herbs and seasonings like thyme, sage, parsley, rosemary, or basil.
  • Spice It Up: For a spicier version, add some red pepper flakes or a pinch of cayenne pepper to give the vegan sausage gravy a little kick.

Storage Tips

If you have extra gravy, store it in an airtight container with a tight-fitting lid in the refrigerator. This helps keep it fresh. Make sure the gravy has cooled down a bit before refrigerating it.

This gravy typically lasts in the fridge for about 3 days.

If you want to save some gravy for a longer period, freezing is an excellent option. Divide the leftover gravy into portion-sized containers or freezer-safe bags. This makes it easy to thaw only what you need later.

Place the containers or bags in the freezer. The gravy can be frozen for several months.

Heat in a saucepan over low to medium low heat, stirring gently. If the gravy has thickened in the fridge, you might want to add a little non-dairy milk or vegetable broth to it to get it to your desired consistency.

If frozen, let the vegan sausage gravy thaw in the refrigerator overnight.
