My Favorite Chickpea Recipes

I love chickpeas because they are quite versatile vegetables that you can enjoy with various recipes. It has a texture that can range from creamy to crispy, depending on the cooking process. Try some of my favorite chickpea recipes!

Whenever you are ready to cook chickpeas or it’s your first time cooking, these following recipes will help you to learn the variations and you can try them in your regular rotation too!

Are chickpeas good for you?

Commonly referred to as chickpeas, garbanzo beans come from a legume family. They have gained a lot of popularity in recent years as the main ingredient in hummus, a delicious Middle Eastern dip made by blending cooked chickpeas with Tahini, olive oil, and lemon juice. Chickpeas, also commonly known as Bengal gram, garbanzo beans, or Egyptian beans, are hugely popular. However, we are used to seeing only ripe ones! Learn more about green chickpeas today.

How to cook chickpeas?

First, you need to soak the chickpeas before you start cooking, as there can be dust and rocks with them. After soaking, wash them thoroughly to remove the extra unwanted dirt and then soak them. 

You can cook chickpeas in two ways: slow cooker and the instant pot or pressure cook. The timing of cooking dried chickpeas will depend on their size, freshness, and method of cooking. 

  1. Slow cooker: Boiling chickpeas in a slow cooker will take at least three to four hours at high temperature and six to eight hours at low temperature. 
  2. Pressure Cooker: To cook chickpeas in a pressure cooker, the soaked ones will take at least 10 minutes. For dried chickpeas, cook them for 50 minutes.

Chickpea Stew

Want to try comforting, hearty, and healthy food this weekend? Chickpea stew is vegan, gluten-free, and low in fat which is easy to prepare. I love spicy chickpea stew, which makes it more savory and flavorful.

I added diced carrots to give the vegetable touch in the stew. You can also add your favorite vegetables like spinach, eggplant, tomato, or zucchini. 

Jamaican-Style Chickpea Curry

Jamaican-style chickpea curry recipe is made full of strong flavors of thyme, Scotch Bonnet pepper, spring onions, and allspice berries in creamy coconut milk. 

You can prepare this amazing dish in your busy days as it takes around 30 minutes to prepare. A healthy, comforting, and delicious food in just minutes that you could enjoy after work! 

Vegan Chickpea Salad

This vegan chickpea salad is flavorful, delicious, quick, and easy to prepare, a perfect on-the-go lunch or snack. The salad is prepared with smashed chickpeas, which have a touch of classic chicken salad flavors. 

Try it between gluten-free bread slices, on a cracker, or over lettuce and tomato as a salad. It is fully packed with nutrients and healthy calories to keep you full for longer until your next meal. 

Vegan Tuna Salad

It is made with butternut squash, chickpeas, rich flavors of spices, veggies, and coconut milk to add a creamy texture. You can even get a smoky flavor by roasting the butternut squash.

When I lived in England I enjoyed shepherd’s pie, which was a minced lamb stew topped with mashed potatoes. Since becoming vegan, I haven’t made a vegan version. I would have used lentils to make my vegan version but that is the most popular vegan version out there and I wanted to present a different twist.
