I have a lot of Jamaican food recipes spread out all over my website, and I thought I would collect a
few of them in one location for those who are interested in trying something new, or wanted to
try their hand at cooking old favorites.
Jamaica was originally called Xaymaca, which is known as a land of wood and water, our nutrient-rich soil grows some of the best products, with an abundance of fruits and vegetables.
So being on a plant-based or vegan diet in Jamaica is not difficult, after all, the Rastafarians there are mostly vegan, some ate fish. The most notable Rastafarian was Bob Marley.
Although I now live in Florida and have more options. I try to make the recipes as simple as possible, with the mindset that they can be prepared wherever you are in the world, while still being authentic.
There might be one or two ingredients that aren’t as common to find back home in rural Jamaica but for the most part. They can be found in health food stores in Montego Bay, Spanish Town, and Kingston.
For everyone all over the world, most items can be found in Indian, Caribbean, African, Middle Eastern, Asian, and most other international markets.
They are organized in groups, with breakfast, soup, side, main, and dessert dishes included. They are not only vegan but they are also gluten-free.
Of course, we start with a classic, Vegan Ackee. Normally in Jamaica, this is eaten for breakfast,
along with dumplings and callaloo (also included below), but can be eaten for any meal.

This Spinach Soup is a version of pepperpot soup, which is a dish originating in West Africa that
is popular in the Caribbean.
In Jamaica, meat and callaloo are usually used, but I used spinach,
left out the meat, and added lots of herbs and seasonings to make it flavorful and delicious.

Sorrel is a cousin of the hibiscus tree, so not to be confused with the sorrel herb. The flower calyces are dried and made into a popular drink in the Caribbean, Latin America, and Rosella in Australia. It is called the Zobo drink in the Middle East and African countries in Nigeria. It has a tart cranberry flavor.
This flavorful vegan peanut punch is a popular beverage that is not only enjoyed in Jamaica but also prepared throughout the Caribbean. My version of this class punch is made with peanuts, coconut milk, spices and sweetened with maple syrup is so yummy.
Traditional peanut punch is made with condensed milk, to make a vegan version of peanut punch I substituted it with coconut milk and sweetener. Normally freshly roasted peanuts are used, the peanut is blended with water then strained. The pulp is discarded are given to feed chickens.
I have seen peanut punch recipes that included oats, Angostura Bitters, Irish moss, and alcohol but my recipe is very simple, kid-friendly, and easy to prepare using pantry staples. Feel free to substitute the maple syrup with your favorite sweetener whether it be cane sugar, coconut sugar, agave, etc.
Last-minute, I decided to add a banana to make it even more rich and creamy and it was so yummy.
Creamy Vegan Irish Moss (Sea Moss) Drink is a vegan version of a favorite Jamaican drink. This healthy version of Irish moss is prepared with non-dairy milk and spices, and sweetened with dates.
Our house was in front of the beach. After a storm or hurricane, my family would go to the beach to collect lots of brown Irish moss that would be washed ashore by the strong waves.
I quickly learned to identify Irish moss among the other numerous varieties of sea vegetables. We would collect them and take them home, place them on top of the roof to dry for several days until they were completely dried for long term storage. The Irish moss would change color to a translucent cream color after drying in the sun.
My mom would rehydrate the Irish moss by soaking in cold water overnight. The Irish moss would soak up the water and double in size to a more cartilaginous texture.
She would then drain the Irish moss and cook in boiling water until it softens. The Irish moss mixture would then be blended with condensed milk, vanilla, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
For my vegan version, I used coconut milk and dates instead of the condensed milk.

This amazing Jamaican jerk seasoning is tasty, economical and easy to prepare, with authentic Jamaican flavors, including allspice, thyme, nutmeg, and cinnamon. This spice rub is great for roasting vegetables, tofu, or chickpeas.
As a Jamaican, I grew up with Jerk seasoning being added to meat, and the meat being slowly roasted on open pits. Being a plant-based eater, I get to experiment with jerk seasoning on different plant-based ingredients.
This amazing Jamaican Jerk Sauce is so easy to prepare in a food processor or blender and is great on vegetables, tofu, or pasta. It is a popular Jamaican marinade that is recognized internationally and made throughout the diaspora.
I decided to make a more authentic Jamaican jerk sauce recipe, although,
I had to reduce the spiciness drastically since I cannot tolerate the heat anymore now that my taste buds have changed as I get older.
I was only able to include two deseeded Scotch bonnet pepper and that was spicy for me.
You can make my recipe as written and then increase the Scotch bonnet pepper to adjust the heat to your taste.
